Learn to use the one tool you always have with you.
Your breath goes everywhere you go. In this course, you'll learn simple breathing techniques that calm your body, clear your mind, and move your life force energy.
Your breath is there when you wake up in the morning. It's there when you're stuck in traffic and running late, and it's there when you're lying awake at two in the morning with your mind racing. You don't need a video, a quiet room, or a special setup to use it.
Most of the time, though, your breath runs on its own, just like your heartbeat. Think about the last time you got bad news or felt a wave of panic. Your breath probably turned short, fast, and high up in your chest, and you likely didn't even notice it happening.
Here's the good news. You can't tell your heart to slow down, but you can choose to slow down your breath any time you want.
Stress, worry, and a long to do list all change the way you breathe, usually without you even noticing. Here are a few moments you might know well
Your heart pounds and your chest gets tight right before a hard conversation.
You hit a wall of tiredness every afternoon around three o'clock.
You sit down to meditate, and your thoughts keep jumping from one thing to the next.
You feel scattered and pulled in ten directions by the end of the day.
Your breath can help you in every one of these moments.
When you slow your breath down with simple breathing exercises like Box Breathing and 4-7-8 Breathing, and you make your exhale longer, your body shifts out of fight or flight and into rest and digest, and your mind follows right along. Every intentional breath also moves life force energy, which yoga calls prana, through your whole body, so you feel calm, clear, and balanced.
You'll use breathing techniques for stress to calm your body down in just a few breaths, wherever you are.
You'll settle your mind at bedtime so you can drift off to sleep.
You'll wake up your energy when the afternoon slump hits.
You'll focus your mind and go deeper in meditation.
You'll know which breath to use for the moment you're in.
You'll learn 19 breathing techniques, from simple belly breathing all the way to traditional pranayama like Alternate Nostril Breathing, one easy step at a time.
If you're pregnant, or you have a heart, lung, blood pressure, or seizure condition, please check with your doctor before you try the breaths in Chapter 5.
