Energy Healing: Why It’s Important

In order to understand energy healing, you first have to understand your energy. Your energy is your life force energy, and it's your soul. It's what makes you alive. In China, it's called chi, like in Tai Chi. In Japan, it's called ki, like in Reiki. In India, it's called prana. Different cultures, different names, but it's all pointing to the same thing: the energy that animates you and keeps you alive.

Energy Healing: Why It’s Important

That energy is supposed to flow freely through your entire body. Connected to your life force energy is your subtle energy system, and that system includes your chakras and your meridian lines. Think of a chakra as a ball of energy sitting in a specific spot on your body. Your third eye chakra, for example, is a ball of energy centered right in the middle of your forehead. You have seven main chakras running from the base of your spine all the way up to the top of your head, plus smaller ones in your hands and feet.

Your meridian lines work a little differently. Think of them like your veins. Your veins carry blood to your hands, your feet, your legs, everywhere in your body. Your meridians do the same thing with your energy. You can't see them, but they're what carry your life force throughout your entire body, connecting everything together.

Then there's your aura. Your aura is the energy that surrounds you, usually about arm's length or more in every direction. In the scientific world, this is called the biofield, but it's the exact same thing as your aura. Your aura has layers, and each layer connects to one of your chakras. Your root chakra, sitting at the base of your spine, connects to the first layer of your aura. Your sacral chakra, just below your belly button, connects to the second layer. This continues all the way up through each chakra to your crown, so you end up with seven chakras and seven layers of your aura, all part of the same interconnected system.

All of this together, your life force energy, your aura, your chakras, your meridians, is what animates you. It's what makes you you. Without it, you don't live. When someone dies and becomes a ghost, their life force energy no longer has a physical body to move through. Their soul is still there, still intact, just without the body, until they cross over to the other side, which is a whole other conversation for another day.

How Your Energy Is Supposed to Flow

As long as your energy is free and clear and flowing the way it's supposed to, you're going to be healthy, happy, and well. Think of it like a stream of water. As long as that stream keeps flowing, the water stays clear. Your energy works the same way. Energy flows out from your chest, down through your entire body, down the front of you and up the back of you, over your head and around again. This is exactly what Tai Chi is built around, working with that same flow of chi moving through and around you.

When your life is calm and things are going well, you're not thinking about your energy at all, because it's balanced and it doesn't need your attention. But when you're sick, when you're struggling emotionally, when you're carrying trauma or holding onto negative emotions, or when you're dealing with a medical condition, that's usually a sign there's a block somewhere in your energy. And when your energy isn't balanced, it needs to be cleared so it can move back into balance again.

This is where energy healing comes into play. People generally only start paying attention to their energy once something in their life feels off. If everything feels good, there's no reason to go looking for a block that isn't causing a problem.

Is Energy Healing Real

Yes, energy healing is very real, because energy healing uses energy to heal an imbalance in your energy. Think about it this way. If you break your arm, that's a physical problem, and you go to a doctor who sets it and puts it in a cast so it can heal properly. But when there's a break or a block in your energy, you can't go get an X-ray and a cast for it. The break is still real and it still needs to be dealt with, the only difference is how it shows up.

When you break a bone, it's immediate and painful, so you notice it right away and go get it fixed. A block in your energy is much quieter. It can take a long time before you notice anything at all, because what starts happening are things that look like ordinary medical problems, when really, they're rooted in something energetic. Instead of a broken bone, maybe what shows up is chronic carpal tunnel, and that can be connected to a disconnect in your energy that's been sitting there for a while.

Think of your body being at ease when your energy is flowing freely. You feel happy, healthy, and well. But a block in your energy works the same way a dam works on a river. It stops the flow. And when that flow stops, you end up with dis-ease, meaning your body is no longer at ease. If that block goes untreated long enough, dis-ease can turn into disease, which is where you start seeing real medical conditions and emotional struggles show up on a physical, human level.

What energy healing does is bring in positive energy to reach the spot where negative energy has settled, and it removes that negative energy and replaces it with positive energy. Positive energy carries a higher vibration than negative energy, which tends to sit heavy and low. That's the whole reason energy healing works: your body is made of energy, so when something is wrong with your energy, you use energy to heal it.

Does Energy Healing Work, and How Does It Work

Yes, energy healing works, because positive energy carries a higher vibration and a higher frequency than the low, heavy vibration of stuck, negative energy. Think of it the way two tuning forks work together. If you strike one tuning fork and hold it near a second one that's silent, the second fork will actually start to vibrate too, because it's picking up on the frequency of the first one. Your energy responds the same way. When a practitioner, or you yourself, brings in energy at a higher vibration, the lower, stuck vibration around the block starts to shift and rise to meet it. That's how the block loosens and the energy starts flowing again.

Is There Scientific Proof That Energy Healing Works

Yes, there's real research out there on this, studies looking at how energy healing affects the body, the nervous system, stress levels, and more. Science is still catching up to what energy healers have known for thousands of years, but the research that does exist is genuinely supportive.

What's the Difference Between Energy Healing and Reiki

Nothing, honestly. Reiki is its own specific style of energy healing, one that's been around since the late 1800s, so over a hundred years now. But Reiki is a modality within energy healing, not something separate from it. It's like asking what the difference is between exercise and yoga. Yoga is a form of exercise, and Reiki is a form of energy healing. They're not two different things, one is simply a specific practice within the larger category.

What It Means to Have Blocked Energy

We've already talked about what your energy is and how it's meant to flow. Blocked energy is what happens when that flow gets interrupted, and it's caused by a lot of different things. About ninety percent of the time, it comes down to trauma, something negative you've gone through. That could be childhood abuse, a car accident, an illness, almost dying, living through war, or witnessing something deeply upsetting. It doesn't have to be dramatic, either. Sometimes it's the negative voice you use on yourself every day, telling you that you're not good enough or that you shouldn't even bother trying. Sometimes it's what other people have said to you, criticism, mockery, or bullying that stuck with you longer than it should have.

Whatever the source, if you hold onto these things without releasing them, they sit in your energy and they fester. The longer you carry them, the more they grow, and the more negative experiences pile up, whether it's negative self talk, other people's words, or trauma, the heavier that pile becomes on top of whatever was already there.

How You Know Your Energy Is Blocked

If you're carrying blocked energy that hasn't been cleared, it's going to show up somewhere. Start by looking at your medical conditions. Every medical condition you're dealing with has an energetic root cause somewhere in your body, a sign that something isn't balanced. I have asthma myself, and that connects to a block sitting in my chest, right around my heart chakra. I've worked hard over the years to clear that negative energy, and my asthma isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. I also used to deal with terrible seasonal allergies, and those have mostly disappeared too.

Next, look at your emotions. You don't need to worry about the positive ones, those are exactly where you want to be. It's the negative emotions, sadness, anxiety, stress, depression, fear, that are showing you where your energy is blocked.

Then look at how you talk to yourself. Try this right now: think of five things about yourself that you don't like. Now think of five things about yourself that you do like, not what other people appreciate about you, but what you genuinely like about yourself. Notice which list came easier. If the negative list came together faster, that's negative self talk in action, and every time you say those things to yourself, you're reinforcing a block in your energy.

What Blocked Energy Can Turn Into

When you have a disruption somewhere in your life, whether it's money, friendships, career, or chronic health issues, your body is telling you that something isn't balanced. When negative energy keeps building without being released, it eventually overflows, and that overflow is what shows up as anxiety, depression, or chronic pain. With chronic pain specifically, the pain usually sits right where the block is. If you've ever gone to a doctor with real pain, had every test and scan come back clean, and still walked away with no answers, that's often blocked energy showing up physically with no medical cause behind it. It's your body telling you exactly where to focus.

Trauma almost always sits underneath these overflow symptoms. Anxiety, depression, grief, and stress usually trace back to something that hasn't been healed. That doesn't mean every single struggle comes from trauma, but trauma is responsible for a lot of it. Left unaddressed, it can cause PTSD, nightmares, sleep problems, disordered eating, weight changes, addiction, and deep depression. Clearing the energetic block is how you get to the root of it instead of just managing the symptoms on the surface.

Do You Have to Believe in Energy Healing for It to Work

To a point, energy healing will still work even if you don't fully believe in it, but your mind plays a real role here. The placebo effect is genuinely powerful, because your mind has that much influence over your body. If you go into energy healing telling yourself the whole time that it's not going to work, you're going to block it from working. If you go in with an open mind, even without full belief, and you let yourself actually go through the process, it'll still work, it'll just move slower than it would if you fully believed in it. Your mind can create illness, and your mind can just as easily support healing.

Is Energy Healing Safe

Yes, energy healing is very safe. There are no real side effects beyond an emotional response. As you release pent up negativity, you might cry, feel a little irritated, or feel tired afterward. You're not putting anything into your body the way you would with medication, so there's nothing chemical happening that could cause a reaction. The only thing you might notice is some emotional release, and that's a normal, healthy part of the process.

What an Energy Healing Session Feels Like

It's extremely relaxing. It depends on the person and the specific technique being used, but with a typical Reiki session, you'll lie fully clothed on a massage table while the practitioner places their hands either directly on you or just above you. Energy moves out through their hands and into your body, and it can feel warm, tingling, calming, or relaxing. A lot of people fall asleep during a session. Overall, it just puts you at ease.

Why You Might Feel Emotional During Energy Healing

You're releasing energy that's been blocked and sitting in your system, sometimes for years. Energy healing stirs that stuck energy so it can finally move and come out. Think about it this way: if someone close to you passed away and you never let yourself grieve, if you pushed it down and kept a happy face and moved on with life, that grief builds a block in your energy. It sits there and festers, and over time it can turn into anger and other problems. When you do energy healing, you're stirring up that darkness so it can finally leave. That's often when the tears come, and that's a good thing. You're releasing instead of stuffing it back down, and that release is exactly how healing happens.

Can You Do Energy Healing on Yourself

Yes, absolutely. You can do it through meditation and visualization, imagining yourself standing under a waterfall and washing negativity off your body. You can also learn  how to do Reiki, integrated energy therapy, acupuncture, acupressure, or massage. Journaling works too. There are so many paths into this, and you're fully capable of doing it yourself.

How to Learn Energy Healing

Find a modality that genuinely draws you in. A lot of people gravitate toward Reiki, and it's a wonderful energy healing modality, but it's far from the only one. You want to find something that feels good to you personally. You can also learn to heal your energy through meditation, which is exactly what I teach here at MediSoul, so you don't have to go learn a whole separate style if that's not what calls to you. Beyond that, you can work with pendulums, crystals, salt baths, Florida water, or herbs like sage, cedar, or dragon's blood. Earthing is another great option, where you put your bare feet on real grass or dirt, not pavement, and let the earth absorb what you're releasing while you draw in fresh energy in return.

Can Energy Healing Be Done Remotely

Yes, absolutely. A practitioner can send Reiki energy to you from a distance, and it works just as well as an in-person session.

How Often You Should Get Energy Healing

Once a week, until whatever you're working on clears up. If you do it more often than that, you risk making yourself unwell, because you'd be pulling too much stuck energy out too quickly. Think of your life like a house built on a foundation of negative energy over years and years. If you try to rip that foundation out all at once, the whole house comes crashing down. But if you remove it brick by brick, slowly and consistently, you heal without disrupting everything you've built your life around. If you try to move too fast, you'll end up dealing with real side effects: emotional upheaval, crying, irritability, exhaustion, even getting physically sick, almost like your body is detoxing. Go slow. Once a week, sometimes once every two weeks, is enough for deeper trauma work. Lighter, everyday energy work, simply bringing in positive energy, is something you can do daily without any risk.

How Long the Effects of Energy Healing Last

If you actually heal the trauma you're holding onto, it lasts forever, because you've genuinely let it go. Energy healing tends to clear in layers. Let's say, just as an example, you spend a month working through negative energy connected to your relationship with your mother. After four weekly sessions, you start to feel good, like you don't need to keep working on it. Then out of nowhere, thoughts and memories about your father start surfacing, even though he was never part of what you set out to heal. That's the next layer coming up. You work through that for a while, feel clear again, and then a friend you haven't spoken to in twenty years pops into your head, and you realize you still carry resentment toward them. So you work through that layer too.

This is exactly how energy healing works. It surfaces in layers, and you know what to work on next by paying attention to whatever comes up unexpectedly, old arguments, people you haven't thought about in years, situations that still carry a charge when you think about them. Eventually you reach a point where thinking about that person or situation doesn't bother you anymore. Someone could bring it up and you genuinely won't feel anything. That's how you know it's healed.

How Much Energy Healing Costs

It depends entirely on the practitioner. Some people don't charge anything, some charge a modest amount, and others charge quite a bit, depending on their experience and training. I'm a firm believer that everyone should learn how to do their own energy healing, which is exactly why I built MediSoul Wellness, to teach people how to heal themselves instead of relying only on someone else.

Is Energy Healing Covered by Insurance

Not yet. Science hasn't caught up enough for insurance companies to recognize it as a covered medical treatment. The research supporting it keeps growing, but it's not there yet in a way insurance companies currently accept.

How to Find a Real Energy Healer

Trust your intuition. Look for someone you genuinely feel connected to, someone who feels like they know what they're doing. That said, I always encourage people to learn how to heal their own energy. You are your own best practitioner, because you know exactly what you've been through, what you need, and what you want. You're fully capable of healing your own energy, and I'll always push people toward learning that skill for themselves.

Is Energy Healing a Religion

No, it has nothing to do with religion at all.

Is Energy Healing Against My Religion

That's something you'll need to look into within your own faith. Energy healing itself has nothing to do with religion, but if your particular religion has a stance on it, that's a conversation to have within your own belief system.

Can Energy Healing Replace Medical Treatment

No, and I'll never tell you to skip medical care. If you break your arm, go to a doctor, not a Reiki practitioner. Once your arm is set and in a cast, that's when you bring in energy healing to work on it further. If you're having a heart attack, go to the emergency room. Once that crisis has passed, energy healing can help you address whatever energetic root contributed to it in the first place. It's never one or the other, you use both together. Go to the doctor for the medical piece, and use energy healing to work on the deeper cause.

Is It Safe to Combine Energy Healing with Medication

Yes, completely. There's nothing about energy healing that interferes with your medication. And if the reason you're on medication traces back to unresolved trauma that eventually manifested into a physical condition, energy healing can help you work on that root cause alongside your medical treatment.

Bringing It All Together

I hope this gives you a real understanding of what energy healing is, how it works, and why it matters. Learning how to do this for yourself means learning how to let go of the past, release the trauma you've been carrying, and stop holding onto whatever makes you angry, sad, or irritated. If you're dealing with toxic relationships, you don't have to heal the other person, but you do have to do your own work. The goal is to get to a place where you're healthy, happy, and well, where someone can bring up something painful from your past and you can remember it clearly without any emotional charge attached to it anymore.

I've been through a lot of trauma and a lot of hard things in my own life, and I've healed so much of it that none of it weighs me down anymore. I let it go, and you can do the same thing. A lot of people hold back from healing because they're afraid of who they'll be without the trauma they've carried for so long. But letting it go doesn't erase you, it reveals a better version of you. You become happier. You become healthier. You become someone who lives life instead of just surviving it, someone who isn't spending their days angry, snapping at the people around them, or stuck in chronic conditions or addiction. You can let this go, and energy healing can support you through every part of that, alongside your medical care and your everyday wellness.
