6: The Solar Plexus Chakra - Chakras 101

Moving up from the sacral chakra, the next chakra in your system is the solar plexus chakra, and this is where your personal power lives.
The solar plexus chakra is located in the upper abdomen, just above the navel and below the center of the chest. Its Sanskrit name is Manipura, which translates to "city of jewels." It is yellow in color and is associated with personal power, confidence, willpower, and self-worth. It governs your sense of identity, your ability to set goals and follow through on them, your self-esteem, your boundaries, and your capacity to take action in your own life. It connects physically to the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, small intestine, and the digestive system as a whole.
The solar plexus chakra is represented by the fire element, and that connection is direct. Fire generates energy, drives action, and provides warmth and light. When your solar plexus chakra is open and balanced, you have that same quality of inner fire. You feel confident in who you are. You trust your own judgment, you're able to make decisions without constantly second-guessing yourself, and you feel a genuine sense of purpose. You know how to set boundaries and hold them without guilt, and you take up space in your own life without apologizing for it. Your digestion tends to be strong, and your energy levels feel consistent and reliable.
When this chakra is blocked or out of balance, the impact shows up in very specific ways that most people have experienced at some point. Low self-esteem is one of the most common signs: the persistent feeling that you're not good enough, that other people are more capable or more deserving, and that your opinion doesn't really matter. People-pleasing falls squarely in this category too. If you find yourself constantly saying yes when you mean no, shrinking to avoid conflict, or shaping yourself around what other people want instead of what you actually need, that's a blocked solar plexus chakra at work. Difficulty making decisions, chronic procrastination, and starting things without ever finishing them are all signs as well. On the opposite end, an overactive solar plexus can show up as controlling behavior, excessive anger, a need to dominate situations, and an inability to let others lead. Physically, a blocked solar plexus chakra can manifest as digestive problems, acid reflux, ulcers, blood sugar issues, and chronic fatigue.
A lot of solar plexus wounds come from experiences where your sense of self was undermined. Being criticized or humiliated as a child, being told your ideas were wrong or stupid, being in relationships where your needs were dismissed or your voice was shut down; all of those experiences chip away at the solar plexus over time and teach you that it isn't safe to be fully yourself.
How to Start Healing It
Because the solar plexus chakra is represented by fire, engaging with heat and sunlight is one of the most natural ways to support it. Spending time in the sun, practicing breathwork like Breath of Fire, or even sitting near a fire or candle flame while focusing your attention on your upper abdomen can help activate this chakra.
Physical exercise, especially core-strengthening work, directly supports the solar plexus chakra since it governs that region of the body. Planks, twisting yoga poses, and any movement that builds physical strength and confidence in your body also builds confidence in this energy center.
Practicing making decisions, even small ones, is a practical and underrated way to rebuild solar plexus energy. Every time you make a choice and stand behind it, you strengthen the muscle of self-trust that lives here. Start with low-stakes decisions and work your way up.
Meditation focused on the solar plexus involves sitting comfortably, placing your hands on your upper abdomen, and visualizing a bright yellow light glowing there. As you breathe in, imagine that light expanding and growing more intense. As you breathe out, feel any doubt or hesitation softening and releasing. You can also imagine a flame burning steadily in that space, strong and unwavering.
Crystals that work well for the solar plexus chakra include citrine, which amplifies confidence and personal power; tiger's eye, which supports clear decision-making and courage; pyrite, which strengthens willpower and the ability to take action; and yellow jasper, which promotes stability and a grounded sense of self. You can hold these during meditation, place them on your upper abdomen while lying down, or carry them with you throughout the day.
