4: The Root Chakra - Chakras 101

The root chakra is the first chakra in your energy system and the foundation that everything else is built on. It is located at the base of the spine, at the tailbone. Its Sanskrit name is Muladhara, which comes from two words: "mula," meaning root, and "adhara," meaning base or support. It is red in color and is associated with strength, vitality, and survival. It governs your sense of safety, your basic survival needs, your connection to your physical body, and your ability to feel stable and grounded in your life. It connects physically to the legs, feet, bones, spine, large intestine, adrenal glands, and the nervous system.

The root chakra is represented by the earth element. Earth is solid, stable, and supportive, and those are exactly the qualities this chakra is meant to create in your life. When your root chakra is open and balanced, you feel those same qualities inside yourself. You feel safe in your body and in your life. You trust that you're going to be okay, that there will be enough money, enough food, a roof over your head, and that your life is not about to fall apart. You feel present and grounded rather than scattered or anxious, and you have the energy and physical vitality to show up for your daily life. There's a steadiness to you, even when things around you get difficult, because your foundation is solid.

When the root chakra is blocked or out of balance, you feel it in some very recognizable ways. Chronic anxiety is one of the clearest signs, especially the kind that doesn't have a specific cause, the low-level background hum of worry that follows you everywhere and makes it hard to feel okay no matter what you do. Financial fear is deeply tied to this chakra too. If you find yourself in a constant state of panic about money, even when things are objectively okay, or if you feel like the ground could drop out from under you at any moment, that's root chakra energy. Feeling disconnected from your body, like you're living in your head and floating through life rather than actually inhabiting it, is also a sign. On the other end, an overactive root chakra shows up as rigidity: hoarding, controlling behavior, an obsessive need for security, and an inability to adapt when things change. Physically, a blocked root chakra can show up as lower back pain, constipation, digestive issues, problems with the legs and feet, fatigue, and issues with the adrenal glands.

Many root chakra wounds come from early experiences where safety and stability were inconsistent. Growing up in a home with financial instability, unpredictable caregivers, or any kind of physical threat teaches your nervous system that the ground is never truly safe. Those early lessons get stored in the root chakra and continue to run in the background until they're addressed.

How to Start Healing It

Because the root chakra is represented by earth, the most direct way to start balancing it is through grounding, which means physically connecting with the earth. Walking barefoot on grass or soil, sitting outside with your back against a tree, or simply spending time in nature without a screen in your hand all help move stagnant energy through this chakra and signal to your body that it is safe.

Physical movement that involves the legs and lower body is also very effective, since this chakra governs that part of the body. Walking, running, squats, yoga poses like Warrior or Mountain Pose, and any exercise that gets you feeling strong and stable in your legs and feet all support root chakra healing.

Establishing routines is another powerful tool here. The root chakra responds to consistency and predictability. Regular sleep, regular meals, and a daily structure that your nervous system can rely on all communicate safety to this energy center.

Meditation focused on the root chakra involves sitting or lying down, placing your attention at the base of your spine, and visualizing a deep red light glowing there. With each breath in, imagine that light growing stronger and more stable. With each breath out, feel yourself sinking deeper into the support beneath you. You can visualize roots extending from the base of your spine down through the floor, into the earth, anchoring you.

Crystals that support the root chakra include red jasper, which promotes grounding and physical vitality; hematite, which is one of the most stabilizing stones available; obsidian, which helps release fear and trauma stored in the body; and black tourmaline, which provides energetic protection and a strong sense of stability. You can hold these during meditation, carry them in your pocket, or place them at the base of your spine while lying down.
